Located in the district of Pamplemousses, in Beau Plan, The Sugar Adventure is a great place to visit with your family. It offers you a fun way to discover the history of sugar production in Mauritius tracing the introduction of sugarcane by the Dutch in 1639 to the present day.
The museum is housed in a former sugar factory where most of the original machinery has been preserved. From films, reconstructions, objects, games to kid zones, everyone will learn something through an interactive and educational route. Don’t miss the pretty village shop offering artisanal products and where you can taste up to 12 different varieties of sugar as well as rum for the older ones. In the heart of the estate, the restaurant extends a gourmet invitation with a delicate cuisine offering a blend of the flavours of the island.
The site is open every day including public holidays from 9 am to 5 pm. An entrance fee is charged.
One-hour guided tours, included in the entrance fee, are organised from Monday to Thursday at 10.30 am and 2:30 pm and on Fridays at 2.30 pm. If you do not get the chance to experience it, an audio guide is downloadable in 7 languages (French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Chinese) on the App Store and Google Play.
Every Wednesday, a guided tour of the sugarcane fields is offered to take you through all the stages of sugar production, from cane cutting to juice extraction.
